Hero Sandwich & Gelato

I am really having too much fun filling my tummy with good food in this break! But that means I will have to go on a budget for the next few weeks.. Such is life of a student.

Hero is the answer to yummy budget food! Living on a constant budget doesn't mean that you have to live on cereal and homemade sandwiches everyday. RMIT students are lucky because Hero is actually part of the building itself (not sure which one exactly). This is truly a hidden gem since a friend from RMIT doesn't even know about this place YET.

J got the Catcher, I got the KidRoyale, and HY got the By the Hour. They are all priced at AUD$7.80 for a half, and AUD$11.80 for a whole. This concept is somewhat similar to Subway but there is no way Subway can be compared to this! Hero will win hands down and 3 of us agreed that we will pay a little more for Hero instead of the AUD$5 combo from Subway.
The KidRoyale was highly recommended by other food bloggers and I can understand why they were raving about it. Lying under the 3 crispy onion rings is a bed of pulled beef, dijon and baby spinach. I tried eating the onion rings together but it was just impossible. Things started to get messy.. But I did not mind a single bit since the sub was just so delicious!
I did not manage to get a taste of the Catcher and By the Hour, but I am quite positive my friends enjoyed it as much.

There is an option between the Classic (a normal baguette) and wholegrain for the bread. Toasted baguette is just yummmm~

You may also consider getting the sets that comes with a drink and a jam-filled/flavour of the day donut (AUD$9.90) or fries (AUD$11.90). I opted for the Chocolate-filled donut that happened to be the flavour of the day. I've heard many people raving about the jam-filled donuts but chocolate and donut just sound so right! It turned out to be pretty disappointing since I expected the donut to be oozing with chocolate. I would definitely come back to try the other subs and the jam-filled donuts though!

You know how they say that if someone comes to Melbourne and doesn't like the weather, all he/she has to do is wait for an hour? Yep, that is pretty darn right. It was raining in the morning before lunch so we cancelled our plans to explore Fitzroy. But an hour later, it was bright and sunny with STRONG cold winds. Melbourne is insane.

But nothing can stop us from getting our gelato.

We went to the highly raved about N2 Extreme Gelato to see what everyone was talking about. The idea is that liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the ingredients to make the Gelato instead of the usual traditional methods. The staff also make it right before your eyes so that you can enjoy the theatrics and swoon and wooooow and be little kids all over again.

Our first cup was the Rosemary Chocolate and Hazelnut (AUD$6). It tasted pretty good with chocolate chunks and crushed hazelnuts mixed in, but I wouldn't say that it was mind-blowing. I definitely had better gelato elsewhere, maybe in Singapore.

We quickly polished the first cup and we just had to get another scoop! After much debate, we settled for Me-So-Happy (AUD$6). Who would have thought of using Miso as a salty flavouring instead of the usual salted caramel? However this was pretty disappointing as well since it was just milk ice cream topped with Miso coated peanuts. I enjoyed the milk ice cream, but I'm just not sure if it was worth the price!

Theatrics aside, N2 Extreme Gelato has rather creative flavours such as Creme Brulee and Black Lava Salted Dulce De Leche (no idea what is this). They do change their menu quite often though, so I can't promise you the flavours you'll get when you're there! I probably will not make a special trip down to Fitzroy to get a cup of gelato, but I happened to be in the vicinity again, maybe I will drop by just to check out the new flavours.

Oh, try to go at an awkward timing in the middle of a weekday afternoon if it is possible. It is still a new and exciting concept so I've heard that the queues can get pretty long!
